Rep. Robert Dostis Seeks Re-election

WATERBURY CENTER - - Rep. Robert Dostis of Waterbury announced that he is seeking re-election as one of two Vermont state representatives for Waterbury, Duxbury, Huntington, and Buel's Gore.

In declaring his candidacy for re-election Dostis said, "It is an honor to serve the residents of my community. In addition to representing local interests in Montpelier, one of the most important roles I have as a representative is connecting people to their government." Dostis said that it has been tremendously rewarding to help constituents resolve a variety of problems and to work with them to navigate the state bureaucracy.

This past session, Dostis served as Chair of the House Natural Resources and Energy Committee. His work won praise from the Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility, which acknowledged Dostis with its 2005 Legislator of the Year award. Among his committee accomplishments were five energy related bills that set a course for enhancing Vermont's energy independence-by promoting the in-state generation of electricity from renewable energy sources, and by providing greater investments in energy efficiency. Dostis also successfully shepherded the Growth Center bill though an elaborate review process by eight different House committees. This legislation, which promotes development in designated areas while maintaining Vermont's rural character, will help determine Vermont's land use patterns for decades to come.

Rep. Robert Dostis, a registered dietitian, has served as executive director of the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger for 11 years. In addition to chairing the House Natural Resources and Energy Committee for two years, Dostis served four years on the House Commerce Committee, the last year as Vice-Chair. This work has allowed him the opportunity to address the needs of Vermont's children, families and seniors, as well as to focus on critical issues in the areas of economic development, sustainable energy, and natural resource preservation.

Looking ahead to another term in the House, Dostis noted that key priorities for legislative attention include: developing an aggressive energy policy that promotes energy independence and produces good paying jobs; providing economic stimulus and assistance for quality childcare and youth programming; and ensuring all Vermonters have access to affordable health care and other prevention services.

Dostis says he is looking forward to embarking on his re-election campaign. "Connecting with people while campaigning door-to-door, attending community events, and meeting over coffee at local stores offers me the best opportunity to listen to people's thoughts and concerns," Dostis said.

Rep. Dostis serves on the Governor's Hunger Task Force, Building Bright Futures Transitional Board, Clean Energy Advisory Committee, Rural Vermont Energy Committee, Northeast Regional Anti-Hunger Network and as a Corporator for Northfield Savings Bank. He was a 2004 Ford Foundation's Leadership for a Change World Award recipient. He has a bachelor's degree from Fordham University and a master's degree in clinical nutrition from Hunter College. In 2004, Dostis received an honorary doctorate from Burlington College.
